Christmas at Capella

Last night we got to experience a traditional Swedish Christmas party. The most exciting part for me was the candle making. Apparently most Swedes have a tradition of making candles for advent. If their families don't do it, they know of some that do or have fond memories of making candles in school. I was so excited, never having made my own candles and want to bring the tradition home with me.

Here are a few pictures of what a Christmas party in Sweden is like.

The beginning of the process, can you see my excitement?

You just keep dipping until the wax builds up to the size of candle you want.

The traditional Swedish Christmas drink is something called Glug. It is like a very spicy cider that you put nuts and raisins in. It is either made from apple juice or a mixture of wine and rum. Glug is always served with the Christmas cookie Pepparkokar (gingerbread).

Along with candle making there was also wreath making. Today all the houses on campus have a fresh wreath on the doors.

We also make hotdogs in the dining room fire place. It was a really cozy evening and a nice time to be together.

This is our good friend Luca who is from Holland. She made this walnut pie for Fika today which starts in 5 minutes, so that is where I am headed!

  1. It's always good to see you. It's fun to start the celebrations early, that way Christmas lasts for a long time. See you in 8 days.
